On Optimal Control Problems with Sparsity Constraints

In this presentation we consider optimal control problems which involve an L1 norm in the objective. On the one hand, such a term is often a natural measure of the control cost. On the other hand, this term leads to sparsely supported optimal controls, which is desirable, for instance, in actuator placement problems. We present optimality conditions, error estimates, aspects of numerical linear algebra, and recent numerical results, which include results with rotational sparsity structures.
